How a class is split into rounds, what each section code means, and the words and ribbons beside each placing.

A class at a horse show can run as one go or as several rounds. PaddockReport shows each round as a section of the class, and every placing in the words that round awards.

Rounds and section codes

Code Shown as What it awards
CLS Class 1st, 2nd, 3rd and on
CH Championship Champion, Reserve Champion, Top 10
SFF Semi-final/Final Champion, Reserve Champion, Top 10, or Gold, Silver, Bronze
FNL Final Champion, Reserve Champion, Top 10, or Gold, Silver, Bronze
SF, A–E Semi-final, Section A, B… Adv for the entries called back, or 1st, 2nd… when the judges placed the round; always Adv in a Class A elimination
I–X Preliminary I, II… Adv for the entries called back, or 1st, 2nd… when the judges placed the round

National shows run qualifiers (I, II…) and semi-finals (A, B…) before a final. Class A shows such as Scottsdale run most classes once (CLS) and hold separate championships (CH); a big championship may first run eliminations (Section A, Section B).

Some national qualifiers and semi-finals are placed: the judges put the horses in order, and the round prints 1st, 2nd, 3rd. Others only name who is called back, and every entry that moves on reads Adv. A Class A elimination never places anyone.

Placing words

  • Champion and Reserve Champion are 1st and 2nd in a championship or final; 3rd to 10th are Top 10.
  • 1st, 2nd, 3rd are placings in a class that is not a championship, or in a qualifier or semi-final its judges placed.
  • Gold, Silver, Bronze are 1st to 3rd in a final that awards medals.
  • Adv means called back to the next round. It is not a placing.
  • Competed means the horse showed but finished past the Top 10, or did not make the next round.
  • Unplaced means the horse showed but the results gave it no placing.

Ribbons

In a class, each placing carries the ribbon it earned: blue for 1st, red for 2nd, yellow for 3rd, then white, pink, green, purple, brown, grey and light blue to 10th. A champion's rosette is the blue, red and yellow tricolor; a reserve's is red, yellow and white. Medal finals draw gold, silver and bronze medals.

A placed round has ribbons of its own. A national semi-final's placings draw a pale lavender-pink rosette, ringed in blue for 1st and red for 2nd. A national qualifier's draw a solid mint-green rosette. A Class A elimination draws none.

Adv, Top 10, Competed and Unplaced earn no ribbon.
